Supporting our Diverse Global Workforce
To be successful, we must have a strong, diverse and talented team of people who are committed to the values and vision of the company. We are fortunate to have such a team in place. Our employees look at the bank as a place where they can build a dynamic career in a culture of mutual respect. Key to building and maintaining this effective team is ensuring open and direct two-way dialogue between employees and our senior leadership teams.
With tens of thousands of employees worldwide, we have been a leader in providing programs that meet the evolving needs of a global workforce in the areas of healthcare, retirement and compensation. In addition, we provide programs to foster diversity and inclusion, facilitate career development and support work-life balance. We have also been consistently recognized for our efforts to support our employees, including honors in Working Mother’s 100 Best Companies, The Times Top 50 Employers for Women and the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index.

We recognize that our diversity makes us a stronger company. Encouraging a diverse, inclusive workplace gives us the advantage of understanding and meeting the needs of our diverse customers, clients and communities.
We have been widely recognized for our progressive workplace practices and initiatives to promote inclusion. We are proud of our reputation as a company that encourages equal opportunity in all aspects of the workplace.
Our commitment to supporting a diverse workforce has earned us public recognition from a number of publications and organizations in 2011, including G.I. Jobs, Human Rights Campaign, Black Enterprise and many others.
See It In Action
Global Diversity and Inclusion Council (GDIC)
As the bank’s chief governing body for diversity and inclusion, the Global Diversity and Inclusion Council is responsible for setting the strategic agenda and plan for diversity and inclusion globally. The council is made up of top senior leaders from the bank’s businesses and regions, and is appointed and chaired by the CEO. GDIC members serve as champions within their business or region, and work closely with business or regional leadership and councils to align, influence and drive the GDIC strategic agenda with a focus on local priorities and opportunities.
Global Diversity and Inclusion Office (GDIO)
This team is dedicated to proactively promoting and supporting the bank’s diversity and inclusion needs. The team’s diversity experts work closely with corporate, line of business, regional, employee groups and others to execute diversity and inclusion strategies and tactics across the bank. The GDIO provides direct support to the Global Diversity and Inclusion Council, diversity and inclusion business and regional councils, as well as affinity groups.
Diversity and Inclusion Business and Regional Councils (DIBCs)
Formed and sponsored by various lines of business throughout Bank of America globally, DIBCs manage diversity and inclusion initiatives within respective businesses and regions. Council members are senior executives who focused on advising and influencing executive management to achieve business goals through diversity and inclusion. They also recommend strategies to promote diversity through inclusive employee recruiting, retention and development practices.
Corporate Awards
We are frequently recognized for our efforts to ensure a healthy work-life balance. Working Mother magazine recognized us as a “Top Ten Company for Working Mothers” in 2011, and we were also recognized as an “Adoption Friendly Workplace” by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Bank of America Merrill Lynch was recognized by the Workplace Wellness Council in Mexico for quality and excellence in workplace health promotion.
Training, Development and Recognition
We are committed to providing our employees with opportunities for growth and professional development. Training is an investment in our collective success and has a direct impact on the quality of service we provide for our customers.
Our learning philosophy is simple—we have the responsibility to enable our employees around the globe to do their best work. We must ensure that employees are proficient in the skills that are core to their specific jobs in order to deliver for our customers and clients every day.
We offer a number of leadership, management and professional development programs tailored to individual business units that give our employees the skills they need to succeed in their roles. We not only train our employees for the job they do today, but provide opportunities for growth so that they are prepared to advance within the company.
We foster and sustain a culture of recognition that promotes employee engagement and satisfaction. Our Global Recognition Program honors employees for providing great service to customers, exceeding clients’ expectations and demonstrating the company’s core values and leadership behaviors. As its name suggests, it is an inclusive program—reaching around the globe and across cultures and lines of business. It includes three components to cultivate recognition:
• Praising Efforts of individuals or teams through personalized online Recognition Cards and eButtons, for achievements or demonstrations of the company’s core values.
• Rewarding Results for extraordinary accomplishments by presenting “Recognition Awards” to employees in entry-level through mid-level management roles that can be redeemed for merchandise or gift cards/vouchers, or Appreciation Points that can be accumulated for future redemption.
• Celebrating Milestones such as anniversaries with the company, birthdays or other personal events with personalized mementos.
Employee Commitment
We are proud to support our employees who give their time, expertise and financial resources to strengthen our communities. Through a robust Matching Gifts program, we help extend the impact of our employees’ charitable giving. In 2010, employees gave more than $25 million in donations, resulting in a combined impact of $50 million in communities. In addition, through our Volunteer Grants program, employees may direct a grant to a nonprofit organization where they volunteer regularly. Each year, our volunteers donate more than one million hours to help meet critical community needs everywhere we have a presence.
It’s about making those neighborhoods better places to do business, better places to raise children, better places to help each other. As individuals—over 280,000 strong—our employees touch hundreds of thousands of lives through volunteering their time and expertise and directing charitable grants.
